The Rugged Serial Breakout is a dual-channel level translation board for working with RS232 interfaces. It allows you to connect digital serial signals (0V-5V or 0V-3.3V) to RS232-level signals (nominally +/-10V).

Two independent channels allow you to use a single set of TxD/RxD signals or optionally add RTS/CTS hardware flow control. Or, you can use the second channel for a completely separate second TxD/RxD interface.

Fully assembled and ready to use right out of the box. The dimensions are 0.90" x 1.06".

This product is really useful for working with RS232-level serial interfaces, which are nominally at +/-10V thus not directly compatible with microcontrollers that work at 0V-5V or 0V-3.3V.  RS232-level serial interfaces are still common on industrial equipment, PLC's, smart motor drivers, etc.

The breakout board comes with 3 connectors:

  • a power connector, where you must apply 3.3V-5V. The current draw here is very low, typically no more than 1mA.
  • an RS232 connector where you connect RS232-level signals (nominally +/-10V, +/-25V absolute maximum)
  • a LOGIC connector where you connect microcontroller signals (0V-3.3V, or 0V-5V)

The silkscreen on the PCB shows the direction of data flow for each of the two independent channels, A and B. Remember to connect all of the grounds together!
